Fair Usage Policy (FUP) for e IT s
- Introduction & Purpose
This Fair Usage Policy ("FUP") is an integral part of our Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Its primary purpose is to ensure fair and responsible use of our shared hosting resources, guaranteeing optimal performance, stability, and security for all our customers. By subscribing to our services, you agree to comply with this FUP.
- Our Commitment to Fairness
We are committed to providing a high-quality service. We believe that a small number of users consuming a disproportionate share of shared resources can negatively impact the experience for others. This policy outlines what we consider to be fair and unfair usage and the steps we may take to address it.
- Scope of Application
This policy applies to all shared hosting, cloud hosting, and dedicated hosting provided by e IT s, including any service marketed as "Unlimited".
- What Constitutes "Fair Usage"?
Fair Usage is the consumption of resources consistent with the normal operation of a personal, small business, or organisational website. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Serving web pages to visitors.
- Running standard content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Joomla).
- Using database-driven applications as intended.
- Sending a reasonable volume of emails (e.g., for customer communication, not mass marketing).
- Specific Usage Limits & Guidelines
While designed to be flexible, our shared hosting environment is not suited for certain high-resource activities. The following are guidelines and potential triggers for review:
- CPU Usage: Sustained usage of CPU resources that significantly impacts server performance for other users is not permitted. As a guideline, processes should not consistently use more than [e.g., 25%] of a CPU core for longer than [e.g., 90 seconds].
- Memory (RAM): Scripts and processes must not consume excessive memory. Individual processes should not exceed [e.g., 512MB] of RAM.
- Entry Processes: The number of simultaneous processes (e.g., PHP calls, cron jobs) running at any one time should not exceed [e.g., 30]. High concurrency can destabilise the server.
- "Unlimited" Bandwidth & Storage: The term "Unlimited" is intended for normal website file storage and data transfer. It is not intended for:
- The storage of backups, archives, or media libraries not linked to your active website.
- Hosting large download galleries (software, media, etc.).
- Distributing video or audio streams (unless on a specialised plan).
- Using your hosting account as a remote file storage or CDN endpoint.
- Inodes (File Count): An inode represents a single file (including emails, images, etc.). Accounts must not exceed [e.g., 250,000] inodes. Excessive inodes can degrade server performance for all users.
- Email Sending: To prevent spam and blacklisting, sending more than [e.g., 500 emails per hour] from a shared hosting account is prohibited. For bulk email, a dedicated SMTP service must be used.
- Database Usage: Each database should be optimised and not exceed [e.g., 1GB] in size for standard shared hosting. Large, unoptimised databases can cause performance issues.
- Monitoring & Enforcement
We continuously monitor our servers to ensure performance and stability.
- Step 1: Automated Alert / Initial Review: If your account's usage is flagged by our systems, we will investigate the cause.
- Step 2: Notification: We will make reasonable attempts to contact you to discuss the issue and identify potential solutions. We believe in working with our customers to resolve problems.
- Step 3: Mitigation Actions: If the issue persists and impacts other users, we may need to take action, which could include, but is not limited to:
- Temporarily throttling resource usage.
- Suspending specific scripts or processes.
- Offering a migration path to a more suitable service (e.g., VPS, dedicated server).
- In cases of severe, repeated, or wilful violation, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate the account, as per our Terms of Service.
- Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for ensuring that your website, including any installed scripts, plugins, or applications, is optimised and does not consume excessive resources. You should also ensure your website is secure to prevent it from being compromised and used for malicious activity.
- Complaints and Dispute Resolution
If you wish to challenge an action taken under this FUP, please contact us via our official complaints procedure, detailed on our website. We are members of the [Insert Name of ADR Scheme, e.g., CIISAS or Ombudsman Services], an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution provider, whom you may contact if we cannot resolve the issue directly.
- Policy Updates
We reserve the right to amend this Fair Usage Policy at any time. Any changes will be communicated to you via email and/or a notice in your client area. Continued use of our services after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.
